Indian gold futures down on foreign worries

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Indian gold futures were down on Monday tracking a fall overseas and commodity brokerages said prices may stay within a range until uncertainty in global financial markets eases.

"There is a bit of a panic situation due to falls in the global equity markets," said Harish Galipelli, head of research at Karvy Comtrade Ltd. "So people will try to avoid trading for now."

Falls in equity and credit markets are spelling trouble for gold as it is making investors nervous about the possibility of similar falls in commodities, analysts said.

Investors are therefore waiting for clearer cues on the future direction of prices, the analysts said.

Another analyst at IL&FS Investsmart Commodities Ltd. said the near month contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd.

Houston OKs high-tech tracking of probationers

The Houston County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to employ new technology in tracking individuals on court probation.

The board voted unanimously to change the contract with its probation company, Sentinel, to allow for monitoring of some probationers using global positioning system technology and alcohol monitoring bracelets.

Sentinel has previously been contracted to monitor up to 50 probationers with electronic ankle bracelets and telephone checks. Each day, information from the ankle bracelets is downloaded via telephone, and that would tell probation officers whether the probationer had any unauthorized movement.

The difference with the GPS technology, County Administrator Steve Engle explained, is that it would allow officers to track the location of a probationer at any given moment.

DRAMeXchange sees DRAM chip price peak in September

FRANKFURT, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Prices for DRAM computer memory chips are expected to peak in September before supplies increase again when chipmakers allocate more capacity to DRAM and complete transitions to new technologies, DRAMeXchange said.

Contract prices for standard DRAM chips rose 3-5 percent in the first half of August after steep falls in the second quarter, but demand in the spot market was weak as some DRAM and module makers had accumulated significant inventory.

"While the hot PC selling season has arrived, end demand from the spot market has remained relatively weak," the semiconductor price-tracking organisation said on Tuesday.

"Although conditions have improved recently in the spot market when compared to the previous month, prices have not experienced an upswing."

DRAMeXchange forecast that 69 million desktop and notebook computers would be shipped this quarter, a 15 percent increase over the second quarter.
