Software helps track customers

In 2000, Joe Fulmer spent $45,000 for modern customer relationship management software - also known as CRM - to help run his Dayton-based sewing machine retailing firm, Stitching Post. Fulmer also operates stores in Columbus and Springfield.

The computer program now drives much of his marketing, including the trade-in campaign where customers can bring in their machines after a year and apply the entire purchase price toward a new model. CRM prompts an automatic mailing filled with a list of the newest models as well as a reminder. It also helps Fulmer and his staff monitor inventory and prepare for trends.

Gartner: SaaS Market To Hit $19.3 Billion by 2011

The worldwide software-as-a-service (SaaS) market reached $6.3 billion in 2006 and is forecast to grow to $19.3 billion by year-end 2011, according to Gartner .

SaaS is hosted software based on a single set of common code and data definitions that are consumed in a one-to-many model by all contracted customers, at any time, on a pay-for-use basis, or as a subscription based on usage metrics.

The SaaS model is popular for CRM and other technologies such as human resources. Why such success? "The dysfunction of the client/server era is driving alternative approaches to IT development, delivery and management, which SaaS is the most apparent version of," said Ben Pring, research vice president for Gartner.

SaaS adoption is broadening out from CRM and HR into new areas such as procurement and compliance management, Gartner has found.

Construction firm releases new Cape high school bids

The construction management firm overseeing construction of the new Cape Henlopen High School has identified all remaining apparent low bidders for the second group of project contracts, Assistant Superintendent Janis Hanwell said.

"These will be the last contracts except for the final contract for demolition of the existing school, and that won’t be placed out for bid until next year," said Alan Redford, vice president of the project’s construction management firm EDiS Co.

Hanwell said she was provided with the bid results Tuesday, Aug. 7. The final bids ensured there will be enough money left of the $75 million allocated for the high school construction project for EDiS to recommend operable classroom windows be added to the base construction contracts, she said.
